Explaining the Script Assist function
When you first start out with Actionscript it can be confusing trying to conquer the Actions panel. Sometimes it doesn't let you type anything. It's quite a common problem among Actionscript users. The Script Assist, which is there to help you, can become a hindrance. The Script Assist button can be enabled and disabled at any time. Once enabled, it allows you to add and tune your code by changing various forms. Usually, when Script Assist is turned on, you will see something like this:

The only problem with Script Assist is that you cannot type freely and enter your own Actionscript, you are bound to using the boxes and selecting the functions you want from lists. To turn Script Assist off, click the button located on the right hand side of the Actions panel.

Your Actions panel will look much clearer, and allow you to write anything in the white space. However, you can still select functions and code from the list on the left hand side, so you're still assisted somewhat (not shown on screenshot below).
