Tracing Bitmaps Print E-mail

Find out how to trace bitmaps in Flash, to make them vector images.

Using images in Flash is quite difficult. It's not possible to edit specific parts of the image, unless you convert it to a vector image. Doing this will also allow you to zoom in without the image pixelating. So, to start, import your image to the stage by selecting File > Import > Import To Stage... and selecting your image. Your stage should now have your image on. In this example we are using a picture of a car:

Now select the image with the selection tool. With it selected, go to Modify > Bitmap > Trace Bitmap, and you will see the following screen.

Changing the "Color threshold" to a lower number will result in the image looking much more realistic. Leaving it on the default 100 will produce a different effect. You can see examples of both a high and low color threshold beneath.

Example of a high threshold number (150)

Example of a low threshold number (20)

Notice the difference in quality. You will also notice that you can now select specific parts of the image using the selection tool. Feel free to try out the other settings when tracing your bitmap. If you have had problems with this tutorial, post in the KnowFlash forum and someone will help you out.
