Creating A Sound Board Print E-mail

How to make your very own sound board

You see them all over the internet. Sound boards are a bunch of sounds, like movie sound bites and celebrity quotes, that play when you click certain buttons. I'm going to show you how to make a fully working sound board of your own.

First off, open Flash, and start a new file. Draw a rectangle on the stage and copy it. You copy it because you will be needing it over and over again depending on how many different sounds you add. If you add 5 sounds, you will need 5 buttons.

Next, convert your rectangle to a button, by right clicking, and selecting "Convert to Symbol" or pressing F8. Now double click on the button to enter the button editing stage. Use the text tool to label the button. Write whatever you want for the name, obviously keep it relevant to the sound. Naming them "Sound 1", "Sound 2" etc is not recommended, as you will forget which sounds are which.

Insert keyframes on each state of the button (Up, Over, Down & Hit). You now need to import the sound so you can apply it to the button. To do this, select File> Import > Import To Library... then choose your sound and select ok.

Insert a new layer on your button timeline, by selecting the Insert Layer button. Add a keyframe on the down state. Adding the keyframe on the down state will mean the sound will play as the button is pressed down, which is what we want. Now, with the down keyframe selected, open your properties menu, and select your sound from the Sound dropdown box. It will be in the list because you imported the sound earlier.

You will now have your first sound button on your sound board. To make another with a different sound, repeat the same process. You can also import sounds in bulk, if you have alot, instead of adding them one by one.

You could even sell your sound board. There are plenty of premium boards around, and there's nothing to stop you creating the ultimate sound board and selling it on your site.
